What are Women's Issues?

This is a fantastic question. The phrase "Women's Issues" can mean a whole lot of things. What it means to me is that, in general, it's not easy to be a woman in this world. It's not always easy to be a man either, but those of us who identify as women (cisgender and transgender alike) face our own unique set of concerns. These range from dealing with the stress of often doing the majority of emotional labor in our families, to enduring discrimination and lower pay in the workplace, to experiencing greater pressures to find a partner and have a baby,  to juggling so many roles (e.g. friend, daughter, breadwinner, spouse or partner, mother, stepmother), to the experiences of birth trauma and postpartum depression. All of these stressors can lead to depression, anxiety, and feelings of isolation.

It's just different for us, and it is important to work with a clinician who understands that.

Still curious? Here are some common concerns that fall into the category of Women's Issues:

  • Depression - women are nearly twice as likely to be diagnosed as men
  • Stress, anxiety, and feelings of being overwhelmed
  • Singlehood and dating concerns
  • Divorce and separation
  • Perinatal concerns including:
    • Infertility
    • Miscarriages
    • Birth trauma
    • Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (e.g. postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety)
    • Relationship distress
  • Body image and eating disorder concerns including:
    • Anorexia
    • Bulimia
    • Binge Eating Disorder
    • General Body Dissatisfaction

How Do I Know if I Need to Seek Help?

If all of the pressures that come with being a woman in this world start to weigh on you to the point that you are experiencing impairment or disruption in your work or personal life, it's time to seek help. Some signs of this include missing more work than usual or finding that your productivity has decreased, getting into more arguments with friends and family, isolating yourself, or having an unhealthy dependency on others. Futhermore, if you find that you are experiencing uncontrollable worry, panic attacks, difficulty concentrating, frequent crying spells, sadness that won't lift, of difficulty getting out of bed - these are all signs that it is time to get some professional support.

How Online Therapy at Hazel Tree Counseling Can Help

While it's so important for women to have a network of support in their lives, oftentimes we don't. Whether that's due to a recent move or change in life circumstance, such as a divorce, break-up, or new baby, social support ebbs and flows. And even when we do have friends and family around, it can be especially difficult to find other women to connect with who understand our current life circumstances. Single women find that they are surrounded by all couples and women struggling with postpartum depression find that their friends have either moved on or aren't experiencing the same distress.

That's where I come in.

I have specialized training in women's issues, including eating disorders and body image and perinatal and maternal mental health. I also a have a lifetime of being a women under my belt, and a long history of working with women in just about every life stage. So when you need someone who understands and cares, you have someone to reach out to.

I do my very best to meet you where you are. If you are really struggling with your mental health and need clinical support via cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness-based therapy, that is what we will work on. If you're doing pretty well overall but you need someone to motivate you and hold you accountable for creating better self-care, exploring a new dating or relationship strategy, or finding a new career path, then that is what I will help you do.

And do you want to know the best part about it? With online video counseling, we can do all of this while you are in the comfort of your own home, hotel, or dorm room. Many of my clients meet with me in between classes or during their lunch break from their office. Many of the mothers I work with meet while their babies sleep or their older kids entertain themselves in another room. No babysitter required!
